Ir. Joko Widodo or his popular nickname “Jokowi” was born in Brayat Mulyo Hospital, Solo, on June 21st 1961. He was a mayor of Surakarta for 2 period (2005-2010 and 2010-2015) and also a furniture businessman The past life of Jokowi is not like now. His childhood life was so difficult. Little Jokowi was just a son from a carpenter. His family economical situation was in lower class. He life nomadic. When he was five years old, because his parent doesn’t have much money for bought a house, his father take his family to life as a squatter in Timber Market and Bambu Gilingan in south of Anyar river bank. In here, his parent gets a job as a carpenter. As a son from family with lower economical class, Jokowi growth and life so simple. After finished his playgroup, in 1968 Jokowi continued his studies to Tirtoyoso 111 Elementary School, Solo. He was a smart kid, even he studied rarely. After graduated from his elementary school, Jokowi continued his studies to 1 Surakarta Junior High School. At this time, Jokowi starts to like and love Rock Musics. He thought that “Rock Musics is a freedom. Lyrics of Rock Musics are wild, firmly, and able to break down the changes”. After graduated from his Junior High School, Jokowi continued his studies to 6 Surakarta Senior High School. After he graduated from his senior high school, Jokowi continued his studies at the Faculty of Forestry in University of Gajah Mada. After graduated from his college in 1985, he migrated to Aceh and worked in PT. Kertas Kraft Aceh. After a half year worked at PT. Kertas Kraft Aceh, Jokowi decided to come back to Solo to worked in CV. Roda Jati. After a year worked in CV. Roda Jati, Jokowi decided to open his own business as a furniture businessman. And at last, Jokowi was success in his own business. In 2005, Jokowi decided to nominated himself as a Solo Mayor using PDI-Perjuangan as his party. And at last, Jokowi was choosen as a Solo Mayor for 2005-2010 period.

While running for the office of mayor of Surakarta, many doubted the ability of a man who worked as a furniture businessman. But after a year in office, he successfully led many progressive breakthroughs which became widely praised nationally. He adopted the development framework of European cities (which he frequently traveled to as a businessman) into his own city of Surakarta. His supporters pointed to rapid changes in Surakarta under his leadership. Branding the city with the motto "Solo: The Spirit of Java" was seen as a successful move. Some of his main achievements include the following: he was able to relocate junk dealers in the Banjarsari Gardens relatively smoothly, a move which was helpful in revitalizing the functions of the open green land; he emphasized the importance of business firms engaging in community activities; he improved communications with the local community (appearing regularly on local television). Futher, when Balekambang Park was abandoned by its organizer, he made it a public park. Jokowi also did not hesitate to dismiss investors who do not agree with the principles of his leadership. As a follow-up of the new branding of Surakarta, he also applied for Surakarta to become a member of the Organization of World Heritage Cities (which was approved in 2006) and subsequently Surakarta was chosen to host the organization's conference in October 2008. In 2007, Surakarta had also hosted the World Music Festival (Festival Musik Dunia/FMD) which was held at the Fort Vastenburg Complex (it is worth noting that Fort Vastenburg was to be bulldozed and replaced by business center and shopping malls before Jokowi vetoed the decision). The FMD in 2008 was held in the Mangkunegaran Palace Complex. Joko Widodo was chosen by the Tempo magazine as one of the 'Top 10 Indonesian Mayors of 2008' and is longlisted for the 2012 World Mayor award. In 2010, Jokowi for the second time, choosen again as Solo Mayor for 2010-2015 period. But, in 2012, his party, PDI-Perjuangan, nominated Jokowi to run as a candidate of DKI Jakarta Governor. And at last, Jokowi was officially announced by KPUD DKI Jakarta as a winner. From this Jokowi biography, we can get a lesson that we should never give up and always keep fighting and work harder to get what you want.
