MAPPING ASSIGNMENT Course: Geographic Information System 1 (GKP 2301) – 2016 Lecturer: Muhammad Kamal, MGIS, Ph.D. Topic: Mapping important facilities at UGM and surrounding areas Materials: 1. Digital map of UGM (shapefile format) 2. Hardcopy map of UGM (if necessary) 3. Positioning measurement instruments (GNSS, smartphone, map, etc.) Tasks: 1. Identify and locate the position of important facilities in the field. 2. Record the coordinates of each important facility position and the associated attribute description. 3. Plot the position of each object from the field measurement on the digital map of UGM and create the database. At least, the database should consists of object ID, coordinate position (x, y), and object description. 4. Present the final result in a map; please consider the cartographic principles of map visualisation. a. Use A4 paper size setting. b. Map components need to be included: title, content, positional grid, numerical and bar scales, north orientation, legends, UGM logo, group member, and other relevant information if necessary). c. The map layout composition is free; however, it needs to ensure that the map has high quality of presentation, clarity of information and easy to read and understand. Materials to be submitted: 1. Shapefile (.shp) data of the position of each important facility along with its corresponding attribute description. 2. The final map in JPEG format (set the resolution to 300 dpi). 3. Create a single zipped file containing both files with the file name convention as follows: T1_SIG12016_[topic keyword].ZIP, for example T1_SIG12016_PARKIR.ZIP for parking facilities topic.
